Safe Sex or Toxic Toys?

Just when you thought it was safe to bring your sex toy out of the closet . . .

“Across North America sex toys continue to gain mainstream acceptance, reaching well beyond women’s magazines to make appearances everywhere from late night talk shows to drug store chains and high end fashion boutiques., writes Cory Silverberg in “Preaching to the Choir:  Christian Sex Toy Retailing”. Read the entire article here.

However, just as we are becoming comfortable using, buying, and talking about our dildos, vibrators, and the like, we learn that many sex toys simply aren’t safe!  Learn more about what sex toys are really made of

Few toys come with a list of ingredients.  Most sex toys are considered ‘novelties’ not medical devices or health implements so there is no regulatory control over what goes into them or how they are manufactured.  China provides the vast majority of our sex toys, created as 'novelties' with no regulatory control over their composition or manufacture.  China is receiving a host of bad press right now for mistakes and lack of disclosure in baby toys of all areas!  It's a scary thing when even Elmo and Big Bird aren't safe.  Even the Chinese themselves agree that better control is needed.  Read more about the Sesame Street scare and Chinese desire better control.

The buying public (that's us) appears ready to demand safety in their sex toys as well as many other areas of our lives.  CATT is the Coalition Against Toxic Toys, a Minnesota based non profit dedicated to education and safety in the sex toy industry.  Over half -- 54% -- of respondents to a MSNBC poll stated they would even pay more for provably safe sex toys.

So, what’s a body to do?  At WoodPeckers Roost, we recommend a return to traditional, natural products.  Learn more about the history of dildos.   We have taken a long look at these old alternatives.

Leather is akin to cyberskin in that it feels good but is impossible to properly clean and disinfect because it is porous.  Stones, whether semi-precious or penis-shaped rocks from the back yard take time to warm and can be broken – and also being porous, cannot be completely disinfected

Speaking naturally, this leaves us with wood, a surprisingly safe and satisfying substance when safely finished.  (Raw wood, while having certain antibacterial properties, cannot be safely disinfected.)    Properly sanded, there is no chance of splinters; properly sealed with a food safe finish, it is as safe as the salad bowls you eat from.  This product then can be safely cleaned and disinfected.

At WoodPeckers Roost, the safety of your intimate areas has always been our first concern.  We have been making 'green' -- environmentally and personally safe -- dildos for four years.

·         Our jildos, so named as a combination of their owner (Jilda) and their function (dildo) are individually created in the heartland of America -- not in China

·         Jildos are made of domestic and exotic hardwoods from sustainable forests.

·          Our jildos are sanded smooth with no open or unfinished areas, no cracks or dings that manufacturing machinery can cause.

·         Jildos are sealed with salad bowl finish, a substance that after curing is even safe for food contact, complying with 21 CFR 175.300.  This is the same substance you find in wooden food utensils and baby toys.

·         Jildos are easily cleaned and disinfected, too.  Use alcohol or soap and water.

Jildos are not novelties; rather, they are fully functional sex toys -- they are mean to be used.  Jildo's are a naturally safe alternative to the chemical soup of unregulated toys abounding in today’s market.
